Lucas John was stillborn on April 23, 1989. As Geri looked down at him swaddled in a blue green surgical cloth, she had no idea the journey that lay ahead. When Baby Bell was miscarried in May of 1991, the journey intensified in a way that left Geri without words to describe.
Many years later in 2013 Melisa, Geri's daughter and a group of her friends signed up to volunteer at a Remembrance Walk with A Walk to Remember. She encouraged Geri to sign up for the Walk and Geri did, honoring Lucas John and Baby Bell along with many other loss families for the first time. Geri began making blankets for the Care Packages that A Walk to Remember delivered to Colorado hospitals for families experiencing stillbirth and other newborn losses. About a year later Walk to Remember transitioned to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, and Geri joined the Care Package committee, while Melisa continued to volunteer at Care Package assemblies and the Remembrance Walks. Geri served in a variety of roles on the Committee over the next 8 years, and she continued to make blankets as well as hats to include in the Care Packages. Geri and Melisa are grateful for the many fellow volunteers they met and the friendships that were fostered.
At this time Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is graciously passing the Care Package program on to the newly formed non-profit organization Petals of Light. Geri and Melisa, along with countless other volunteers are honored to continue the Care Package program by providing Care Packages for families experiencing stillbirth and other newborn loss in Colorado Hospitals. It is our deepest hope that the Care Packages will help families honor their babies while finding hope and healing.
